Eddie Birkett is living proof that Ireland brought more to Canadian music than green alligators and long necked geese. Born in Dublin, to a classically trained musical family, young Eddie sailed across the pond to New York City in 1958, where his Dad played professionally. His aunt bought him his first set of drums – a professional Slingerland kit – and that would become the launching pad for what he has been slingin’ from the back of the platform ever since.
In ’73, it was curiosity – not a VW micro bus – that would take Eddie California dreamin’ from New York to San Francisco. Then, it was his thumb that eventually took him hitch hiking up north to Vancouver…and eventually east across the prairies to little old Winnipeg…at the height of the bar era when you could work six nights a week and make a good living. Of course, the biggest prize was making a great pitch to Margaret, and calling the ‘Peg his home ever since.
By 1980, Eddie was an in-demand session drummer and percussionist at local studios like Century 21. In the nearly 40 years since, he has played on hundreds of album sessions and radio jingles by day, while performing at night (in more ways than one) with an incredible array of top local performers.
Over the years, Eddie and Margaret have been champions of promoting and supporting local Manitoba music, his way of drumming up bigger opportunities for Manitobans on the national stage. He currently heads up his own company, CMA Entertainment, specializing in booking and managing acts in clubs and bars, concerts, casinos and community events.
With his sharp Irish wit, and a brain for the biz side of the show, Eddie’s the guy who keeps it loose and tight…all at the same time.
